How to Choose a Good Desk Computer or Laptop

April 6th, 2013 by | Category: Computer

The computer has become one of the necessary or vital pieces of equipment that almost everybody or each family has to have. There are so many people, however, who still do not know how to choose a computer or a laptop. Sometimes, people spend a lot of extra money for software, hardware, or other features they’ll never need. In this article, I’m going to list five of the most important things you should consider when choosing a computer or a laptop. This information will help you to save money and buy something that truly suits your needs.

1. What Do You Need the Computer For?

If you want to use your computer to send/receive emails, browse web pages, type letters and articles, watch videos, and do other things like that, a simple and ordinary computer will be more than enough for you. Do not spend extra money on graphic cards or big hard drives. Also a 2-4 GB memory will be enough.

In addition to the above uses, if you plan to use your computer for playing computer games, then you’ll have to spend more money on two things: first, a strong graphic card; and second, strong memory. If not, you will soon have to upgrade your computer or buy a new one because your computer will not prove a powerful enough platform for many of the games.

Please note that you will enjoy your computer more with a wide screen. Do try to purchase a big monitor/screen if you can afford it.

2. Anti-Virus Software:

If you go to popular stores like Future Shop or Best Buy to buy a desk computer or a laptop, salespersons will do their best to sell you as much software as they can. One type of software they will recommend and urge you to buy is anti-virus software. Unfortunately, most people spend a lot of money on anti-virus software because they are scared their computers will become contaminated and/or damaged by viruses. Did you know that you can install strong and reliable anti-virus software for free?

The free version of Avast, which can be downloaded and installed on your computer within minutes, is the best that you can run on your computer. Do not spend any money for anti-virus or fire-wall software.

3. Operating System:

As far as I can see, Windows 7 is now the best and fastest operating system for PC computers and laptops. There are other operating systems like Vista but these may cause problems for you down the road.

4. Extended Warranty:

Usually, computers and laptops come with a one-year warranty. If your computer doesn’t develop a problem within the first year, then it will work for several years without problems (this is, of course, if you don’t accidentally cause physical damage to it). Therefore, you do not need to spend extra money on an extended warranty. In fact, the main profit that computer stores make is through selling extended warranty packages. They try to scare people about what may happen to their computer and convince them to order an extended warranty package.

5. Brand:

I’ll share my personal experiences here: I love Dell desk computers and laptops. Sony laptops are expensive, but terrible. The other brands come after Dell.

In this article, we’ve discussed your computing needs, how to pass on expensive anti-virus software and protect your computer for free, which is the best operating system, the pros and cons of purchasing an extended warranty, and the type or brand of computer that is ideal. This information should prove helpful when you are ready to choose a desk computer or a laptop.
